Your involvement makes a difference!
We congratulate our "mathematically correct" newly elected members to the BOE,
Lori Weinstein, Angel Cepeda and Gary Bettan.

We must stay active and bring in more concerned parents.Continue to play an active role in our children's education, attend Board of Ed meetings and be informed.

If you are in favor of removing Investigations Math curriculum from the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District and having a return to a more traditional math program, please click here to read and sign the petition.

Listen to what parents have to say and voice your opinions about the controversial TERC Investigations math program.  TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE CHANGE IN OUR DISTRICT

The District Math Committee Report - The Short and Long of It
BOE Meeting, Monday, April 23, 2007

The Short Story

A presentation was made by the Math Committee of their recommendations for math, including K-8 and 9-12 Regents changes. Administration, teachers and parent members on the committee participated in the discussion.

The meeting was held in the comfortable Mattlin auditorium with the backdrop of the scenery of the upcoming Fame musical. News 12 was there for part of the time and everyone was dressed for success. An interested audience including parents, teachers, building principals, PTA presidents, teacher union representatives and other concerned citizens settled in for a 4 hour meeting comprised of the Math Committee report, question and answers from the BOE and public participation.

Main Recommendations

  • September 2007 will bring newly written curriculum including an emphasis on math facts and recognizable algorithms. Test prep and supplemental materials will be chosen prior to the start of the new school year and implemented district-wide.
  • From May 2007 forward various math programs will be considered and piloted by teachers and by January 2008 a new math program will be chosen to be implemented in March 2008.

The BOE did not vote as yet to adapt these recommendations. They asked specific questions regarding implementation and accountability. read more...

Is the Fox Guarding the Chicken Coop?
BOE Meetings and Middle School Parent Math Nights - March 27-30, 2007

Spring is here and so is budget time, the primary focus of two Board of Ed meetings this week (Monday was a general meeting and Wednesday was budget-only). It was no surprise that Monday night’s Public Participation predominantly addressed math concerns, which still weighs heavily on most parents’ minds.

Is administration’s role on the Math Committee one of the fox guarding the chicken coop? Can they present an unbiased view of the very program that the superintendent feels so strongly about? Actions speak louder than words. Administration has been sending mixed signals of blended approaches with obvious favoritism towards Investigations’ side of things. So far, only Investigations’ publisher has made a presentation to the Math Committee.  The teacher’s union position is clear about that: don’t buy it. Don’t purchase the second edition of Investigations but rather use what we have and look into purchasing traditional materials and texts. Almost one thousand concerned parents have signed a petition demanding we remove Investigations and bring back direct instruction of proven math facts and time-tested algorithms to our classrooms. Free Us From the Constraining Grip of Investigations Orthodoxy!
Appeal to PTA from the Teacher’s Union – March 31, 2007
The Plainview-Old Bethpage Congress of Teachers (PCT) sent a letter to PTA leaders in the school district with their recommendations on fixing the math problems in our schools. The PCT believes that if all of their recommendations are adopted, we will be able to ensure that all children in a grade will be taught the same concepts and that their teachers will have access to the same library of resources to facilitate math instruction.

Most importantly, they will be freed from the constraining grip of “Investigations” orthodoxy and able to tailor their math instruction to meet the needs of the students in front of them and their own skills and imagination as teachers. Follow this link to read the full letter

Math Help For Our Kids
We are concerned parents from the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District just like you. Our kids are frustrated by the curriculum just like yours. We are providing these links to some websites we have found that you can use to teach your kids traditional math and help them with their homework. Check out our Math Help page.

Make Sure Your Voice is heard!
The Board of Ed is elected by us. This May we will be voting for 3 positions on the Board of Education. The Superintendent and everyone in his office is paid by our taxes. If you feel strongly about the failed Math Curriculum and the mediocre quality of education our children are receiving then you need to tell them. Please call or email them to let them know you will no longer accept mediocrity. Follow this link for a directory of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Board of Education & Administration
